The CDM coordinator has replaced the planning supervisor – the new CDM coordinator job is that of a facilitator, ensuring that all stakeholders in the process understand and act upon their obligations under CDM 2007 (see below).
CDM jobs - the value added approach
Effective implementation of CDM 2007 ensures that full account is taken of health and safety at all stages in the life-cycle of a building. Designing out safety hazards in the construction, maintenance and eventual demolition of a building helps to reduce risks and costs for the client - undertaken to a high standard, this can can add significant value to the project.
CDM coordinator jobs are varied and you are expected to have an understanding of the entire process including design, build and maintenance. CDM Coordinators usually have a design, construction or health and safety background and you would be expected to undertake training courses to top up your experience.
You will get involved in a wide variety of projects and work closely with clients, designers and contractors. CDM Coordinators working for a specialist consultancy are expected to get involved in business development and are often client facing, therefore experience of working in a business environment is an advantage.
Deciphering the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2007
CDM (2007) replaced CDM (1994) and is arguably the most important piece of construction-focused health and safety legislation. The new 2007 Regulations simplify and strengthen the provisions of its predecessor and are applicable to all commercial projects (greater than 30 days or more than 500 person days) and the vast majority of construction projects.
There is now a clear duty for the “Client” to ensure that appropriate arrangements are in place to ensure that health and safety considerations are made and acted upon at all stages of the process. It is the responsibility of “Clients” to appoint competent individuals to their CDM Coordinator jobs.
