What is Testing and what areas do we cover?
Testing is the process of identifying defects, where a defect is any variance between actual and expected results. Through the process of technical investigation, performed on behalf of the tester, it is intended to reveal quality-related information about the product with respect to the context in which it is intended to operate.
White box and black box testing are broad terms used to describe the point of view a test engineer takes when designing test cases. White Box takes an internal view of the test object where as Black Box takes an external view.
Black Box Testing can be divided into three areas:
- Functional Testing tests how well the software meets the function requirement, and if the application behaves as expected.
- Stress / Load Testing tests an application for how it operates under ‘stress’ for example under large numerical values, or large input of front end data ie testing how well it stands up.
- User Acceptance Testing (UAT) – Would be when a system or application is tested by real life users in a controlled environment to see how it stands up.
White Box Testing comprises:
- Unit Testing, which is used to check if the particular module or unit of code is working fine
- Security Testing is carried out in order to find out how well the system can protect itself from unauthorized access or hacking
