All about Melville

In 1994, a group of Midlothian tenants and staff from the then Scottish Homes Dalkeith Area Office, joined together to form Melville Housing. A year later, following a successful ballot of tenants, we purchased over 2,000 properties in Midlothian from Scottish Homes under the Large Scale Voluntary Transfer (LSVT) conditions.

Since then, we have gone from strength to strength. In 2004, we completed our first New Build Development - 14 flats in Mayfield, Dalkeith. Further new developments and acquisitions, including 20 properties purchased from the Ministry of Defence, have added to our housing, helping replace properties sold under the Right to Buy scheme.

44 new build properties will be completed in Autumn 2008 and we are preparing plans for large sites to be developed over the next three years which will accommodate over 200 new properties.

We have also purchased approximately 50 properties through the Scottish Government’s Mortgage to Rent Scheme, helping avoid the trauma of families being made homeless through repossession.

Today, we have a housing stock of 1662 properties situated within Midlothian, South Lanarkshire, North Lanarkshire, East Lothian and Edinburgh. We are registered with The Scottish Housing Regulator are committed to serving the housing needs of the people in our areas of operation.

Over the years, we have achieved and retained accreditations including ‘Investors in People’ and ‘Positive about Disability’ and we are CIMA accredited. In addition, following a successful bid in 2007, we were awarded funding from the Big Lottery to help finance two new services aimed at new tenants.

Who we are

The Association is run by a voluntary Management Committee of thirteen members, made up of tenants and business people with experience in all walks of life and who have an interest in our business. Our Management Committee delegates the day-to-day running of the Association to a professional team of 36 staff.

Our office is based in the historic town of Dalkeith, near Edinburgh. A bustling shopping hub, Dalkeith is the main administrative centre for Midlothian.
