Welcome

21 October 2008: Portsmouth ranked in the top 10% of most improved local authorities

Joining Portsmouth City Council means joining an organisation that seeks to become a learning organisation, an environment that is supportive and encouraging, and where there are opportunities to develop your career and stretch your skills in areas and projects that will impact and affect lives right across the city.

We are committed to ensuring staff enjoy a rewarding role that is supported by a genuine belief in getting the work / life balance correct and constantly reviewing how we attract and retain the right people in the right role.

To deliver the type of organisation and services that meet the needs of the city we need individuals who will focus on developing projects and working in partnership to deliver solutions.  We are here to help the residents of Portsmouth with all aspects of their day-to-day life in the city. We want our communities to be healthy, clean, safe and supportive for every one of our residents - truly a city of which we can be proud.

Our Vision for Portsmouth is to make it:

'The premier waterfront city, with an unrivalled maritime heritage – a great place to live, work and visit'

With its historic naval port Portsmouth is one of the major tourist destinations of the UK. Home to the world renowned historic ships - Mary Rose, HMS Victory and HMS Warrior - Portsmouth is the centre of one of the most important naval and defence heritage regions of Europe.

With the development at Gunwharf Quays finished, Portsmouth has a number of regeneration projects underway - we will help build and be the home port of the two new Royal Navy aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales. Portsmouth's regeneration is being continued in the city centre with plans for more shops, cafes and restaurants, hotels, residential apartments and car parks completing the transformation by 2010.

Portsmouth City Council’s Eight Priorities:

  • Reduce crime and the fear of crime
  • Increase availability, affordability and quality of housing
  • Protect and support our most vulnerable residents
  • Improve efficiency and encourage involvement
  • Raise standards in English and Maths
  • Regenerate the city
  • Cleaner and greener city
  • Improve public transport
