A Networking specialist is responsible for the support and maintenance or the design, development and implementation of network solutions. Networking professionals work in office based environments providing in-house or external support, or in a NOC (Network Operations Centre), NMC (Network Management Centre) or Service Management Centre capacity.

Field based Engineers are recruited to work in a ‘hands on’ capacity either direct with clients and end users or on specific projects. Consultants in the Networking arena progress from support, development or design, into roles with responsibility for Project Management, Solutions Design and Solutions Architecture. Networking Specialists are able to progress to Manager or Director managing teams, division or organisations.
Networking consultants need to demonstrate:
- Education to degree level in an IT, Telecommunications or Engineering related subject
- In depth knowledge of Data, Voice or Wireless systems
- Data: Cisco, Nortel, Juniper, 3Com, Huwaei and Bay routers and switches etc
- Voice: Cisco, Nortel, Avaya
- Wireless: Radio, Mobile, Satellite
- Computer literacy (Word, Excel, Visio, Powerpoint)
- Good communication skills
